Hiranyagarbha Suktam

I.

Transliteration:

hi̱ra̱ṇya̱-garbhas ̱ -sama̍varta̱tāgre̍ bhū̱tasya̍ jā̱taḥ pati̱reka̍ āsīt |
sa dā̍dhāra pṛthi̱vīṁ dyām u̱temāṁ kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 1 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

In the beginning, an ovoid-shaped, golden-hued centre arose, around which swirls a whirlpool. In the centre, exists the sole lord of all the existed beings. The lord established and set the terrestrial and the celestial realms in action. Moreover, all these i.e., the act of creation and what is being created are reverentially offered to the divine being with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


II.

Transliteration:

ya ā̎tma̱dā ba̍laḏ ā yasya̱ viśva̍ u̱pāsa̍te pra̱śiṣaṁ̱ yasya̍ de̱vāḥ |
yasya̍ chā̱yā’mṛta̱ṁ yasya̍ mṛ ̱tyuḥ kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 2 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

The divine being bestows himself as vigour in all directions interconnectedly. All the created beings including the celestial ones adhere to his order with esteem. He is time who signifies death, and his shadow is the nectar of immortality. He, the divine being is reverentially abided with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


III.

Transliteration:

yaḥ prā̎ṇa̱to ni̍miṣa̱to ma̍hi̱tvaika̱ idrājā̱ jaga̍to ba̱bhūva̍ |
ya īśe̎ a̱sya dvi̱pada̱ś-catu̍ṣpada̱ḥ kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 3 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

The vigour or the life force came into worldly existence as the ceaseless activity of life inside every single being. This is the great singularity that manifested into this universe. It governs all the beings such as biped and quadruped beings. This is whom, the celestial beings abide reverentially with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


IV.

Transliteration:

yasye̱me hi̱mavan̎to mahi̱tvā yasya̍ samu̱draṁ ra̱sayā̎ sa̱hāhuḥ |
yasye̱māḥ pra̱ diśo̱ yasya̍ bā̱hū kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 4 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

By the magnificence of the divine being are all these snow-capped or snowy mountains, oceans or water bodies, and their essence termed together. All the directions, where exist all these, are his arms all pervasively. This is whom, the celestial beings abide reverentially with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


V.

Transliteration:

yena̱ dyaur u̱grā pṛ ̍thi̱vī ca̍ dṛ ̱ḷhā yena̱ sva̍ stabhi̱taṁ yena̱ nāka̍ḥ |
yo a̱ntari̍kṣe̱ raja̍sā vi̱māna̱ḥ kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 5 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

The divine being is by whom the celestial expanse, the mighty terrestrial earth and the entire cosmic spectrum are firmly established in him. He is in the intermediate space luminously, as if riding a chariot that emits radiance. The celestial beings abide him reverentially with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


VI.

Transliteration:

yaṁ kranda̍sī̱ ava̍sā tastabhā̱ne abhyaik ̱ ṣe̎tā̱ṁ mana̍sā̱ reja̍māne |
yatrādhi̱ sūra̱ udi̍to vi̱bhāti̱ kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 6 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

The divine being restrains him who bursts into tears in need of support or help and stays firm in the path of excellence in his untrembling mind. There, in that mind, illuminates the evident presence of the supreme (metaphorically represented as the rising Sun), to whom the celestial beings abide reverentially with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


VII.

Transliteration:

āpo̎ha̱ yad bṛ ̍ha̱tī viśva̱-māya̱n garbha̱ṁ dadhā̎nā ja̱naya̍n tīra̱gnim |
tato̎ de̱vānā̱ṁ sama̍varta̱tā su̱reka̱ḥ kasmai̎ dev̱ āya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 7 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

The primordial water-like essence that is expansive, pervades the transient world. There, the ovoid-shaped womb of creation is produced and the fiery flames are radiated. From that, the celestial realm is manifested in all directions, proportionately. This is what the celestial beings abide reverentially with procedural precision by acknowledging its presence.


VIII.

Transliteration:

yaści̱dāpo̎ mahi̱nā pa̱ryapa̍śya̱d dakṣa̱ṁ dadhā̎nā ja̱nayaṃ̎tīr ya̱jñam |
yo de̱veṣvadhi̍ de̱va eka̱ āsī̱t kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 8 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

He who witnesses this divine ceremony of creation thoroughly by the ability of the higher vision perceives that among the celestial beings, the divine being alone is existent. He is whom, the celestial beings abide reverentially with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


IX.

Transliteration:

mā no̎ hiṁsīj-jani̱tā yaḥ pṛ ̍thi̱vyā yo vā̱ divaṃ̎ sa̱tya dharmā̎ ja̱jāna̍ |
yaścā̱paś-ca̱ndrā bṛ ̍hatīr-jajāna̱ kasmai̎ de̱vāya̍ ha̱viṣā̎ vidhema || 9 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

He, from whom these terrestrial and celestial realms and the infallible cosmos governing laws are produced, must not cause us harm. From him, the primordial water-like essence and the luminaries are vastly created. He is whom, the celestial beings abide reverentially with procedural precision by acknowledging his presence.


X.

Transliteration:

prajā̍pate̱ na tvade̱tānyanyo viśvā̍ jā̱tāni̱ pari̱ tā ba̍bhūva |
yat kā̍mās te̱ juhu̱mastanno̍ astu va̱yagm̐syā̍ma̱ pata̍yo rayī̱ṇām || 10 ||

Translation/Interpretation:

O! The lord of all creatures, none is beside thee. The universe which is manifested all around, is created from thee. May our offered wishes to thee be granted that we attain the protectors of prosperity.
